The American Dream (A reflection)
Directions for the assignment
Throughout this unit, we have learned about many aspects of 1950s America. To name a few, here are some of the things that we have covered:
- Immigration
- Suburban Life
- McCarthyism
- The United Nations (Role of the United States in World Affairs)
- Women and Minorities in the 1950s
- The evolution of American cities
- Technology in the 1950s (Television, Cars, etc..)
- The role of sports in the 1950s (Football, Baseball)
Considering that we have covered a vast amount of information, we now must use this knowledge to create something and have a little bit of fun. Students will be assigned a "Newspaper Article" and will be expected to present it in class. There will be extra credit for students that dress up like 1950s style reporters (fedora, sport-coat).
Directions (Newspaper Article): Students will be assigned a two to three page newspaper article on the 1950s. Students will be expected to incorporate a minimum of four events/aspects of the 1950s within their article. Students must format the newspaper article like a real life newspaper (with columns). To do this in Microsoft Word, students will need to click on the “Layout” tab and then click on the “columns” icon. After doing so, click on the two-column option. This will automatically format your paper and allow you to type in a two-column format. In addition to the minimum of four events, I expect students to have a minimum of three pictures within their news articles. If a student wants to put more pictures in their news article they may.
The newspaper article will be due on (date) and will be worth fifty points. The presentations for the newspaper article will be done over the next two to three days, although the presentation is not required, it is worth twenty percent of your grade on the newspaper article. The presentation will not be graded by rubric, but will require students to be able to speak clearly and concisely as well as mention the material discussed about in class. Students will be marked down if they do not talk about the required material. The grading process for the presentation will be mostly done on a credit/no-credit scale. If a particular student mumbles or leaves out at least half of the requirements, then the student will only be eligible for half-credit on the presentation.
Sign up sheets will be available the day this project is assigned in class. As stated previously, students are not required to present but it is encouraged since the highest grade they can achieve on the project will be a B. The assignment will be graded by rubric on a scale of one to four for five possible requirements for a total of twenty points. This total will then be doubled to reach the final score of forty points. The presentation will be worth ten points, for a total score of fifty points.
